As talkSPORT has learned, Arsenal remain confident that Mikel Arteta will commit to the Emirates in the long term.

The Spaniard, who is in charge of the Gunners in December 2019, has entered the final year of his contract in north London.

talkSPORT reported in May that Arsenal would make an offer to Arteta generous salary increase to make him the highest-paid manager in history.

With the start of the new 2024/25 season, some Arsenal fans are nervous that their former captain could leave the club next year.

However, talkSPORT understands that is not the case, with club chiefs believing it is only a matter of time before he signs new terms.

Arteta has repeatedly stated that he sees his future at Arsenal, where he wants to lead the club to their first Premier League title since the ‘Invincibles’ in 2004.

“What hasn’t changed is how happy I am and how valued I feel here and how much I enjoy representing this club.

“Things are happening naturally and our relationship is so good that I don’t expect there to be any problems.

“But if things go in the right direction, it will happen.”

He had previously stated: “We have a great relationship with everyone at the football club. I’m really happy where I am and things will sort themselves out.”

Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his first season as Arsenal manager, led Arsenal to two second-place finishes in the league.

Arsenal finished last season with 89 points – their second-highest tally – while also winning the most games in their club’s history (28) and scoring the most goals (91).

Arteta will now focus on preparing his team for Saturday’s game at Aston Villa – a stadium where they lost 1-0 last season.

Talks between the two teams are at an advanced stage and the 28-year-old is about to return to England after a guest appearance at Newcastle.

While Merino appears to be on his way to us, Hale End graduates Eddie Nketiah and Charlie Patino are likely to move to Nottingham Forest and Deportivo de La Coruna respectively.
