The playoffs are just over three weeks away, and the Cleveland Guardian And Los Angeles Dodgers know they’ll be playing baseball in October. The question is what seed each team will receive. It’s becoming increasingly likely that both teams will hold onto their division leads and get a first-round bye in the playoffs, skipping the three-game wild-card series.
The Guardians lead the Kansas City Royals in the loss standings by four games, 3.5 overall, with 20 games left to play. The Minnesota Twins are faltering and are now five games behind Cleveland. Minnesota and Kansas City play again on Sunday, so the Guardians know that even if they lose to the Dodgers, they won’t lose ground to KC or Minnesota in the standings. Additionally, Cleveland just played seven games against the Royals, so Kansas City had its chance to make up ground and ultimately missed it. The Royals will have to make Cleveland fight down the stretch to have a chance. The Guardians have weathered a series of crises and are still on track to win a division title. They are four games ahead of the Houston Astros for second place in the American League, which would give them a wild-card bye.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, at 85-57, are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for the best record in the National League and in all of baseball. With 20 games to go, they are five games ahead of the six-game losing San Diego Padres in the National League West. That’s a decent lead at this point in the season. The real race the Dodgers are involved in – at least the race that matters more than battling with the Phillies for first place in the National League – is battling with the Milwaukee Brewers for second place, which – once again – offers a wild-card bye. LA leads Milwaukee by three games, 82-60. That’s a sizable lead, but nowhere near as big as the Dodgers’ in the NL West. The Dodgers have a lot of work to do if they want to avoid the wild-card series.

Tanner Bibee Comparisons Jack Flaherty
Tanner Bibee (11-6) has a 3.56 ERA. He has been a reliable part of the Guardians’ rotation this season, and his value to the team in 2024 will be even greater when you consider that other starting pitchers like Triston McKenzie and Logan Allen have struggled so much that they had to go to the minor leagues to work on their technique and mechanics. Cleveland wouldn’t be leading the AL Central without Bibee’s consistency.
It must also be said that Cleveland’s competent offense has allowed Bibee to win 11 of 17 decisions. The Seattle Mariners have pitchers with Bibee’s 3.56 ERA — or something very close to it — who have a negative record in win-loss decisions this year. The Guardians have given Bibee the run support his pitching has earned.
