In the Blender: Who impressed at their new Premier League club?

“In The Mixer” is FST’s weekly column where we sit down with our team of football betting experts and get their thoughts on the hot topic of the week.

The first round of Premier League fixtures is now complete and there were plenty of new faces to see over the weekend as several of the summer signings made their first competitive appearance for their new clubs.

We asked our team of experts which new signings caught their attention in the last few days.

James Milton

Newcastle fans were not impressed by Southampton striker Ben Brereton Diaz’s role in Fabian Schar’s first-half red card at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

However, the Saints need some bite up front if they are to avoid a quick return to the Championship and the busy, crafty Brereton Diaz – just 25 years old – definitely has an eye for goal.

He made a number of appearances against Newcastle, combining well with Adam Armstrong, and can build on his promising loan campaign last season, in which he scored six goals in 14 Premier League games for doomed Sheffield United.

Phil Agius

Savinho’s first Premier League appearance for Manchester City lasted just 45 minutes, but that was more than enough to give the impression that he could become a regular in Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

The Brazilian winger was signed from Troyes in the summer after spending last season on loan at Girona in La Liga, and was able to showcase his skill on the ball on City’s right-hand side of attack before making way for Phil Foden at half-time.

By this time, he had already shown that he was likely to become a favorite among the champions’ fans.

Joe Casey

Yankuba Minteh was substituted after 45 minutes of his Premier League debut for Brighton against Everton, but showed why the Seagulls broke their club record by signing him.

The former Newcastle player provided the assist for Kaoru Mitoma’s first goal and caused problems for the Everton defence with his speed and trickery.

His combination play with Mitoma will be crucial for Brighton this season and there are not many teams in the league that have a more dangerous combination of wingers.

Liam Flin

Despite his hefty price tag, Amadou Onana seemed like a smart signing for Aston Villa this summer and he impressed against West Ham at the London Stadium.

His header after four minutes was the perfect start for Villa and his presence in the air will be crucial this season.

But he also controlled the game in midfield, finishing with a pass accuracy of almost 97 percent and supporting Villa’s defense in the capital with three tackles, two interceptions and three clearances.

He and Youri Tielemans could form an impressive pivot in Villa’s midfield this season.

Henry Hardwicke

It was a brief appearance as a replacement for Crysencio Summerville on his debut for West Ham, but I don’t think it will be long before the 22-year-old is a regular starter for the Hammers.

Summerville scored 19 goals for Leeds in the Championship last season and the Dutchman showed promise when representing the Whites in the 2020-23 Premier League season.

Julen Lopetegui may have to change his system to accommodate Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Summerville in his starting line-up, but I expect the 24-year-old to be a shooting star this season.

Will Maxwell

Despite being part of a West Ham defence that conceded two goals against Aston Villa, I was impressed with Max Kilman’s performance on Saturday. The former Wolves captain was a key reason the Hammers stayed in the game for long periods, his presence enough to unsettle Leon Bailey in the first half as he dribbled past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Two tackles, two interceptions and seven clearances is a decent performance for West Ham’s most expensive defender on his debut and he will likely be a fixture in this backline all season.

Ian Wilkerson

Amadou Onana seemed like an excellent signing for Aston Villa after his strong performances for Everton last season and there are few better ways to start his debut than by scoring after just four minutes, which is what he did against West Ham on Saturday.

He has already proven his value to Unai Emery’s team and we can get used to him having an influence on Villa’s set pieces.

But you can see what managers mean when they like new signings who have already proven themselves in the Premier League. And it was noticeable that he was one of the few newcomers to start in Saturday’s games.

He sets up the game brilliantly and gives Villa great strength in midfield. He will probably only get better.
