Manchester United writes unwanted history without even playing – new low for Erik ten Hag
Manchester United are breaking unwanted records – and this time they didn’t even have to play to set another one.
It is the first time in the Premier League era that United have not had a single player named in the PFA Team of the Year for two consecutive seasons.
It was a tough time for Erik ten Hag since there are several Unwanted successes in the last season.
This included the lowest placing in league history and the club’s most defeats in the Premier League era.
It was also the first time in 34 years that they finished the season with a negative goal difference.
There were mitigating circumstances as injuries piled up over the course of the season and winning the FA Cup mitigated the situation somewhat.
Now they have gone another year without a player in the PFA Team of the Year.
Cristiano Ronaldo was their last player to be called up to the team from the 2021/22 season onwards.
Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw had previously been named in the previous season.
This time the team is dominated by the stars of Man City and Arsenal, who provide a total of nine players.
Gunners goalkeeper David Raya was nominated after keeping 16 clean sheets last season, with teammates Gabriel and William Saliba also making it into the category.
Kyle Walker from Man City and Liverpool Centre-back Virgil van Dijk formed the rest of the defence.
Rodri, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard were chosen to complete the midfield trio.
Meanwhile, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins were selected for the attack.
The last time Man United went two seasons without a player in the Team of the Year was in 1986/87 and 1987/88.
Phil Foden won the top award as PFA Player of the Year, while Cole Palmer was named Young Player of the Year.
Man United started the season with a win against Fulham in their Premier League opening match.
Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to Brighton on Saturday at 12:30pm, with live commentary on talkSPORT.
