It looks like NFL players will compete in flag football at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Jeff Miller, executive vice president of the NFL told reporters On Monday, the NFL and the players’ association held ongoing discussions about the best way to proceed with such a project.

“The enthusiasm we’ve seen from our players or more generally for flag football in 2028 … has been remarkable,” he said. “Discussions continue to be ongoing with the (NFL) Players Association and with the players themselves … but of course the hope is that players who want to compete in the Olympics and represent their country will have the opportunity to do so. … We’re actively working on that.”

Top-class players such as Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Tyreek Hill and Caleb Williams have already expressed interest to take part in the Games, and many more will surely want to represent their country as the Olympic Games approach.

“I really want to play for the Olympic flag football team,” Burrow said during a Look To Excuse my opinion. “Like me, Ja’marr (Chase), Justin (Jefferson). Me and my friends are out there playing football. … I think that would be really cool.”

The NFL even introduced a commercially Hurts throws a burning football over the cauldron on the roof of the LA Coliseum to promote football being part of the Olympics.

While there is always a risk of injury, the next Summer Olympics will be held from July 14 to 30, 2028. This means teams don’t have to worry about players missing a regular season game or even preseason games while participating in the Games.

The participation of NFL players will certainly generate more interest, but not everyone is enthusiastic about the idea.

“I think it’s disrespectful that they automatically assume that they can make the Olympic team because of who they are – they didn’t help develop this game and bring it to the Olympics,” said US national team quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette, according to the Guardian. “Give your respect to the guys who helped get this game to where it is today.”

Doucette helped the USA win the 2021 World Cup and the 2022 World Games title. He also led the red-white-blues to the American Continental Championship title as the tournament’s most valuable player in 2023.

Still, it will be difficult for any flag football player to beat players like Mahomes, Hill and others if they truly want to compete for a spot on the roster.

First, however, the NFL and NFLPA must work out an agreement that will allow players to showcase their talent at the Olympics.
