The 2024 Democratic National Convention opened in Chicago on Monday evening, as the party officially named incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris as its nominee for the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Joe Biden was the keynote speaker to close the first evening, but there were several big names appearing on his behalf, including Golden State Warriors Head coach Steve Kerr.

Kerr is a freshly minted gold medalist after leading Team USA to an indelible run to the top podium at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Kerr won five championships as a player and four more as a head coach, but one could argue that his greatest moment was his passionate appeal to end gun violence in the wake of the Uvalde Elementary School massacre in 2022. A meaningful speaker with his recent Olympic experience and his ties to Chicago as a member of Michael Jordan’s Bulls dynasty, Kerr delivered a powerful speech that is garnering praise across social media.

Kerr sang the music for the Bulls’ starting lineup, which has been the only consistently good thing about the Bulls since Jordan’s second retirement.

Kerr ended his speech with an attack on Republican candidate Donald Trump with Stephen Curry’s signature “night, night” celebration that he became famous at the Olympic Games.

Kerr spoke about why it is important to him to voice his opinions despite the polarizing nature of politics.

Kerr also poked fun at Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz’s past as a high school football coach. Kerr also knows his way around the football field.

Kerr also spoke about his Olympic experience:

Kerr’s father was killed by political gun violence when he was 18. Now 58, Kerr is a pretty good basketball coach, but it looks like he could have a future in politics if he really wanted it.
