Steward intervenes when Lee Carsley makes an unfortunate mistake shortly before Ireland vs England
Shortly before his first game as England manager, Lee Carsley accidentally found himself on the dugout of the Republic of Ireland.
Carsley was appointed Three Lions Interim coach and a Nations League duel against Ireland, live on talkSPORTwas the first test for him.
Carsley played 40 games for Ireland during his playing career and showed that old habits die hard before kick-off.
The fans were amused by the irony when the English coach accidentally went to the right and found himself in the Ireland before a steward and officials quickly intervened.
Carsley quickly walked to the other side of the sideline with a brief grin before finally finding his proper place.
The players of Ireland and England then entered the field, with the players of the latter team being harassed by a pitch invader.
Carsley’s mistake was all the more regrettable given that the debate before the game was dominated by his decision not to sing the English national anthem.
The former midfielder was born in Birmingham but played 40 international matches for the Irish national team during his career.
Ahead of the game, he revealed that as a player he did not sign the Irish national anthem, but as U21 coach he signed the English national anthem.
Carsley says this is because he is focused on the game ahead, but his decision not to sing the English anthem has proved controversial.
Jamie O’Hara of talkSPORT turned to X and said: “What do people think about Carsley not wanting to sing the national anthem? That’s fine with me, see you later. You’ve just lost the whole nation before you’ve even kicked a ball. Thanks for coming, Lee.”
As expected, Carsley remained silent during both national anthems, while the English anthem was loudly booed by the host’s fans.
However, Carsley and his Three Lions took the lead after just eleven minutes through former Irish international Declan Rice.
The midfielder held his hands up and refrained from cheering wildly, even though he scored a goal in front of the English fans.
However, former Irish youth player Jack Grealish did the opposite when he scored the 2-0 shortly before the half hour mark.
