The Connecticut Sun take over the Los Angeles LakersOur WNBA odds series has our Sun Sparks prediction, odds and tips. Find out how to watch Sun Sparks.

This is a big week for the Connecticut Sun as they begin a long road tour of the West toward the end of the regular season. They just lost two straight home games to Seattle and most recently to Las Vegas. One game behind the Minnesota Lynx in second place in the WNBA, the Sun need to decide what kind of team they are. They have been very, very good for most of the season, but they are stumbling at the wrong time.

Crucially, a late-season injury to Alyssa Thomas has clouded things for the Sun. Thomas has played the last few games and logged regular starter-level minutes, but she hasn’t been effective, raising the question of whether she should take a few days off to better recover. Dewanna Bonner and Brionna Jones are doing their jobs as the team’s most reliable starters, but the supporting cast is getting short shrift. Connecticut has failed to score 68 points in its last two losses. The Sun have been easy to defend and have shot poorly from three-point range, two realities that are heavily intertwined. Marina Mabrey scored 15 points against Vegas on Friday but only shot one three-pointer. She needs to shoot threes better for the Sun to become the team they want to be. Mabrey was acquired from the Chicago Sky to make that exact difference, but it’s just not happening — at least not yet.

Connecticut plays two games in Los Angeles against the Sparks. This is the first of the two. Connecticut then plays in Phoenix and Las Vegas before returning home to play Minnesota on Sept. 17. The game could decide second place in the league… if the Sun are close enough in the standings. If Connecticut endures a difficult road trip through the West, the game against Minnesota might not matter. For the Sun, it’s the crucial period in their battle for second place in the WNBA. They begin Sunday one game behind the Lynx and still need to improve a lot as a team, especially on offense.

Why the sun can cover the spread/profit

The Sun were terrible on offense last week. There’s no other way to put it. That might seem like a reason to bet against Connecticut, but when you consider how slim the odds are that the Sun will continue to flounder like this, and when you also consider that the Sun weren’t very good in a close and shaky win over the Sparks a few weeks ago, the betting odds are in their favor. Connecticut needs to have a strong offensive performance. If that happens, the Sun will outperform everyone else in this game.

Why Sparks can cover the spread/profit

LA almost beat the Sun on the road a few weeks ago. The Sun are playing poorly on offense. Alyssa Thomas doesn’t look 100 percent on the court. Connecticut’s supporting cast isn’t playing well. LA is playing at home and has nothing to lose. The lead isn’t huge, but it’s not small either. LA can definitely keep this game close enough to cover.

Final Sun Sparks Forecast and Picks

The Sun have been as bad offensively in their last few games as they have been all year. Chances are they will be much better here against the worst team in the WNBA. We’re betting on the Sun.
