Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will not play for the Belgian national team as long as Domenico Tedesco remains coach.

Courtois missed much of last season due to two knee injuries and was left out of Belgium’s squad for Euro 2024, despite returning to fitness and starting for Madrid in the Champions League final.

The 32-year-old, who has played 102 international matches, had a falling out with Tedesco in June 2023 after Leaving the Belgian squad before their 2024 European Championship qualifier against Estonia.

“Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after careful consideration, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his leadership,” former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Courtois wrote on Instagram., external

“I accept my share of responsibility in this matter. But looking to the future, my lack of trust in him will not help to maintain the necessary atmosphere of cordiality.

“The (Belgian) federation, with which I have had several discussions, accepts my position and the reasons that led me to this painful but logical decision.

“I am sorry to have potentially disappointed some fans, but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium as it puts an end to a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals.”

The Red Devils were eliminated in the round of 16 against France at the 2024 European Championship. Al-Qadsiah goalkeeper Koen Casteels was in the starting line-up in all four games.
