New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil was taken out of Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians in the fourth inning due to a lower back injury.

Gil called for a trainer after throwing a changeup to Cleveland hitter Jose Ramirez when Steven Kwan stole second base. After a brief meeting with manager Aaron Boone and a trainer, Gil was lifted and replaced by Tim Hill.

After seven days off, Gil allowed three runs and three hits in three innings. The rookie allowed six walks and had three strikeouts, but only threw six of 20 batters, including Ramirez, strikes on the first pitch.

Gil entered Tuesday’s game 12-6 and has a 3.39 ERA in 24 starts. Gil also struggled with control at times, allowing 66 walks in 124 2/3 innings after missing most of the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery.
